Before I started looking into ways to make money online, I’d already made a pretty big assumption: that it probably wasn’t for me.
Not because I didn’t want to build an online business or wasn’t willing to learn, but because I already knew that showing up online and being visible in the way I thought I had to be just wasn’t something I wanted to do.
As someone who values her privacy, the idea of constantly sharing my life online, filming myself, and putting myself out there for everyone to see never felt particularly appealing. In my mind, though, that seemed to be what successful online business owners had to do.
Even after trying several different online business ideas over the years, I still carried that belief around with me. I never really saw the results I wanted in any of those ventures, and still assumed that if I ever wanted to build something truly successful, I’d eventually have to become far more visible online than I was comfortable with.
But I continued to research, unwilling to give up on my dream of building an online business in a way that felt right for me. That’s when I started hearing more and more about faceless digital marketing, and I was instantly intrigued.
So down the rabbit hole I went. And honestly, it was eye-opening. I was introduced to a whole other side of the internet, where women were building businesses in ways that looked very different from what I was used to seeing on social media. And for the first time, I started to really, truly believe that maybe I could actually do this.
Do You Need to Become a Social Media Influencer to Make Money Online?
Short answer? Nope! But let’s talk about it, because when I first started learning about online business, especially building on social media, I assumed success and showing your face went hand in hand, and I think a lot of women have this same belief.
It can feel like to get anywhere online you need to be loud, performative, and overshare your personal life for content. Constantly filming yourself, talking to the camera, and building a personal brand around who you are. And I really didn’t want to do that, and if you’re reading this, I’m guessing you don’t either. Luckily for us, it’s absolutely not necessary (hallelujah!).
Truth is, building an online business, even using social media, doesn’t have to mean being constantly visible, or even showing your face at all if you don’t want to. There are thousands of people using platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, and YouTube to grow businesses without ever becoming the centre of attention or the “face” of the brand. They’re creating content, building audiences, and generating sales, but they’re doing it without making themselves the product.
What Does a Faceless Online Business Actually Look Like?
Building a faceless online business doesn’t mean hiding away and not showing up at all. Even if you’re not going to show your face or share much about yourself, you still need to connect with your audience or whoever you’re trying to reach, provide value and build trust with them. The difference is that you get to do it without feeling like your physical presence has to be part of the marketing strategy.
This might look like sharing lessons you’ve learned, documenting parts of your journey, talking about products you genuinely use, or creating content that helps people solve a real problem. The level of visibility is entirely up to you. It’s not about hiding; you’re still showing up and serving people, just in a way that feels more comfortable and sustainable for you.
For me, that was a huge distinction. I wasn’t looking for a shortcut or a way to avoid the work. I simply didn’t want to feel like I had to constantly be “on” or share parts of myself that I’d rather keep private.
The whole reason many of us want to build an online business is to create more freedom and flexibility in our lives. If building that business requires you to constantly do things that drain your energy or make you uncomfortable, it can start to feel like you’ve simply created a different kind of job for yourself.
That’s why I think it’s important to build a business in a way that feels aligned with who you are. There’s nothing wrong with loving the spotlight. But there’s also nothing wrong with wanting to build a business in a way that doesn’t require you to constantly be in it.

What’s the Best Faceless Online Business for Beginners?
While there are lots of different options available when it comes to building a faceless business online, as someone who has tried quite a few of them, I personally think one of the best ways to get started is with digital products and affiliate marketing.
Why? Because they’re relatively simple business models that allow you to learn valuable skills while you build, without needing inventory, staff, or a complicated setup. And if you focus on affiliate marketing, you don’t even need to create your own products. Instead, you’re recommending products and services that have already been created by someone else.
Many people use affiliate marketing and digital products to build faceless brands and then use platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Pinterest to promote them. If you already have a physical product or business, you can even use the same approach to market that.
That’s one of the things I love most about this model. It isn’t tied to one platform or one specific way of doing things.
How to Get Started Building Your Faceless Online Business
So, if you’ve got to this point and you’re thinking, “Okay, sounds good, Soph, but how do I actually DO this?” then my advice is simple: don’t overcomplicate it.
You don’t need to learn everything overnight or have your entire business mapped out before you begin. You just need to pick one path, start learning, and slowly start implementing. Which is exactly how I got started.
After spending far too much time jumping between different ideas and trying to figure everything out on my own, I eventually decided to admit defeat and follow a digital marketing course that taught me the proven methods and strategies other women were already using to build online businesses without showing their faces.
Having the step-by-step roadmap made a huge difference and was what finally allowed me to take intentional action, instead of constantly wondering what to do next and guessing my way through it.
If you’d like to learn more about the course I learned from, you can check it out here. And if you’re not quite ready and want to see exactly what’s inside and whether it feels like the right fit for you, you can download a free sneak peek here.
Remember, you don’t have to build your online business the way everyone else is doing it. There are no bonus points for making things harder for yourself than they have to be. The point is to find an approach that feels right for you, start where you are, and give it enough time to see what happens.
