If you’re anything like me, you might find the thought of building an online business a little intimidating. As an introvert, or just somebody who doesn’t relish the thought of constant online exposure, it can often feel like that’s the only way to grow because it seems like that’s what everyone else is doing. Which can lead us to conclude that building an online business and income just isn’t in the cards for us.
For a long time, I genuinely believed that I’d always be at a disadvantage. I thought success online was reserved for the loudest, most confident people, and that if I wasn’t willing to become one of them (which I wasn’t), I’d never make it work.
Thankfully, I’ve since realised that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, I now believe being an introvert can actually be one of your greatest strengths when it comes to building an online business. You just have to let go of the idea that your journey has to look like everybody else’s.
Why Introverts Often Think They Can’t Succeed Online
I think one of the biggest reasons so many introverts doubt whether they can build a successful online business is because of what social media shows us every day.
Open Instagram or TikTok, and it’s easy to come away thinking that success only comes to people who are confident on camera, happy to share every part of their lives, or post multiple times a day. And if you’re someone who values their privacy or simply finds that kind of thing exhausting, it can quickly make you feel like the cards are stacked against you before you’ve even started.
I know that’s exactly how I felt. I used to see all these people on social media and think to myself how there was absolutely no way that could ever be me. I even started to worry that, as much as I wanted to build an online business, it just wasn’t going to be possible for someone like me.
What I understand now, though, is that me being an introvert was never really the problem; it was that I’d convinced myself the extrovert way to build an online business was the only way.
You Don’t Have to Build Your Business Like Everyone Else
Learning that there was another way to build a successful online business and that I didn’t have to do it the same way as everyone else was when things really shifted for me.
I’d been trying to build something online for years at this point, but I think because I had that belief in the back of my mind, I was subconsciously holding myself back, and maybe even self-sabotaging without realising by constantly jumping from one idea to the next, forever restarting and never building any momentum.
What I eventually realised and what I want to impress upon you is that there is no one “right” way to build an online business. Just because you see someone having success with a certain strategy doesn’t mean your path has to be identical to theirs for you to have success too.
The beauty of building an online business is that you get to create something on your terms, in a way that fits your personality, strengths, and goals. If a particular strategy doesn’t align with who you are or the kind of business you want to build, that’s ok; it doesn’t mean you’re doomed to fail. More often than not, it just means you haven’t found the right approach yet.
Once I stopped trying to force myself down a path that didn’t feel natural, everything became so much more enjoyable. I finally gained clarity, stayed consistent, and stopped my toxic habit of business-hopping to the next shiny thing.
Why Being an Introvert Can Be a Good Thing When Building an Online Business

One belief I’d like to help you put to bed is that being an introvert is something you have to work around. Because I actually think it’s one of the things that can help when growing an online business. I know, you may be sceptical and screwing your face up at me right now, but let me explain…
As introverts, we’re often naturally reflective and analytical. We tend to think things through, are good at problem solving, and, quite importantly, we usually don’t mind (or even enjoy) working alone. While those qualities might not seem particularly exciting, they’re actually incredibly useful when you’re building something that takes patience, consistency, and requires you to be constantly learning and implementing.
I’ve also found that introverts often come across as more empathetic and genuinely want to help people. The desire not to be the centre of attention naturally leads us to focus on creating content and resources that we believe will be genuinely useful, rather than just creating content to be seen.
Of course, I’m not saying that being an introvert automatically equals success, the same way being an extrovert doesn’t either. But I do think it brings certain strengths that are easy to overlook when you’re busy wishing you were more like everyone else.
Rather than seeing your introversion as something that’s going to hold you back, I strongly advise you to lean into it, because it could end up being the very thing that makes you and your business stand out from the crowd in the best way.
How to Start an Online Business That Works for You
If there’s one piece of advice I’d give any introvert wanting to start an online business, it’s this: stop asking yourself, “How is everyone else doing it?” and start asking, “What kind of business do I actually want to build?”
There’s no prize for forcing yourself into a business model that makes you miserable. If the thought of filming daily videos or sharing your personal life online fills you with dread, don’t do it. There are so many different ways to build an online business, and the best one will always be the one that suits your personality, your strengths, and the kind of life you want to create.
The first step is choosing the right business model for you. If you’re not yet sure what that is, I’ve created a free guide, which you can download here. Inside, you’ll learn five beginner-friendly ways to make money online without showing your face, so you can get started with the right business model for you instead of wasting time on something that’s not.
And if you’re serious about making money online and want the strongest start possible, I highly recommend that you check out the faceless digital marketing course I learned from here. It’s the thing that finally gave me the clarity, structure, and the confidence I needed after trying to figure everything out on my own.
Remember, being an introvert doesn’t mean you can’t build a successful online business. It just means you need to find the right way to do it for you. And in my experience, that’s not a weakness at all. It’s one of your greatest advantages.
