If there’s one thought that’s crossed my mind more times than I can count since I started looking into building an online business, it’s this: “Am I too late?”
Everywhere I looked, I felt like there were so many people who had been growing their online businesses for years, had built up their audiences, and were now reaping the rewards of the time and effort they’d put in. Meanwhile, I was sitting there wondering whether I’d already missed my chance before I’d even gotten started.
Maybe you’ve had that same thought, too. Maybe you’re wondering whether the internet is just too crowded now, or whether everyone who’s going to succeed already has. If so, trust me, you’re definitely not alone. But the good news is, I’m here to tell you why that’s not the case, and why I think now is actually the best time for you to start.
Is It Really Too Late to Start an Online Business?
In my opinion? Absolutely not.
In fact, I’d argue that there’s never been a better time for people to start building an online business. We have access to more information, more tools, and more opportunities than ever before, many of which are either free or incredibly affordable to get started with.
Yes, there are more people building online businesses now than there were ten years ago. But there are also far more people shopping online, searching for information online, and discovering new brands online than ever before. As the internet has grown, so has the demand.
Look, I get it. It’s easy to look at people who started years ago and assume they’ve taken all the opportunities with them, but that’s simply not true. New businesses, creators, and brands are growing every single day.
Think about it. Do you really believe that every person who’s ever going to be successful online has already started? Of course not! It’s actually a pretty silly thought, isn’t it?
So no, I don’t think you’re too late. I think you’re arriving at a time when building an online business has become more accessible than ever before. The real question isn’t whether you’ve missed your chance. It’s whether you’re willing to take it.
Why It Feels Like You’ve Missed the Opportunity
I think one of the biggest reasons so many of us feel like we’ve missed the boat is because we’re constantly comparing our day one to someone else’s year 3.
We discover someone who’s been building their business for years and only see where they are now, not how it was in the beginning, or everything it took to get there. We don’t see the early days where they had hardly any social media followers, made very little money, and were just figuring things out as they went along, maybe like you are now.
Social media is great, but it really doesn’t help in this regard. Most people naturally share the highlights: the sales, the milestones, and the exciting moments. They don’t often post about the self-doubt, the failed ideas, or the months where it felt like nothing was moving in their business.
I know that’s something I used to really let affect me. I’d see other people’s success and automatically assume I’d left it too late, when in reality, I was just making unfair comparisons between myself and people who had been doing it for a while.
The truth is, everyone who has a successful online business had to start somewhere. They were beginners once, too. And the only way to get where they are now is to do exactly what they did in the beginning: start.
What Actually Matters More Than Starting Early?
The most important thing I want you to take away from this post is that getting started early isn’t really what gives people an advantage. Sticking with it long enough to see results is.
Trust me, I have been there. More times than I care to admit. I’ve started many online ventures with so much excitement and enthusiasm, thinking each time it would be different. A few weeks or even months would go by, I’d have done all the work setting things up, and I’d be at the point where, really, it was just a case of being consistent and waiting for momentum to build. And the same thing would happen. Every. Single. Time…
I’d expect results too early, become discouraged when I didn’t see them, and quit.
And please, please, please hear me when I say this: DO NOT DO THAT! (Seriously 🫠)
Honestly, it’s like hitting the reset button on any progress you’ve made, even if you can’t see it yet. I don’t like to think about how much quicker I could’ve potentially seen results if I hadn’t sabotaged myself by doing this so many times. But hey, you live, and you learn, and hindsight really is 20/20.
The people who eventually succeed aren’t always the ones who started first. They’re often the ones who kept learning, kept showing up, and kept going when things felt slow or uncertain.
I genuinely believe consistency beats timing every time.
So, instead of asking yourself whether you’re too late, maybe ask yourself a different question: “Am I willing to keep going, even when it feels like nothing’s happening?” Because that’s the part that really makes all the difference.

How to Start an Online Business Even If You’re Starting From Scratch
So, you may now be thinking, “Okay, cool, I get it, I’m not too late… but where do I actually start?”
When you’re starting from absolute scratch, I know it can feel really overwhelming. There are so many different business models, strategies, platforms, and opinions out there that it’s hard to know where to begin, let alone who to listen to.
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve tried multiple online business opportunities over the years, but the path I ended up sticking with is digital marketing. For me, that means creating content around products and resources that I genuinely believe in, whether they’re digital products I’ve created myself or products created by someone else. And when someone makes a purchase through one of my recommendations, I get paid.
Digital Marketing allows you to build an online income without creating your own products (unless you want to), holding inventory, or having to become a full-time influencer. This suited me perfectly because I didn’t want to have to wait to create my own products before I could get started, and also had zero interest in building a business in a way that required me to be constantly visible online.
When I decided to start Bobbie’s Desk, I spent far too long trying to piece everything together from YouTube videos and social media posts, convinced I could figure it all out on my own. Instead, I just ended up feeling more and more confused and frustrated by the often conflicting information.
That’s when I decided to invest in the digital marketing course I’d been eyeing but hoping I wouldn’t have to buy. I’d purchased my fair share of courses in the past, and many of them honestly hadn’t been worth it, but I was so overwhelmed, and I just wanted one place to learn, one plan to follow, and one community of women who were all working towards the same goal. Something told me this time it would be worth it, and thankfully, I was right.
Having that guidance made such a difference. Instead of constantly second-guessing myself or wondering what I should be doing next, I could focus on actually learning, taking action, and building my business one step at a time.
If you’d like to learn more about the course I learned from, you can check it out here. And if you’re not quite ready, you can also download a free sneak peek to see exactly what’s inside before deciding whether it’s a good fit for you.
Something I really hope you take away from this post is that you’re not behind. You haven’t missed your chance, and you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. Every successful online business started with someone deciding to take that first step. There’s no reason you can’t take yours today.
